Anonymous Servers To Strip IP Addresses
By Joan Kickosawa
Do you know what anonymous servers are? Okay, in order to be
more specific and stop any jokes about undercover wait staff,
this is in regards to email servers, receiving and your ability
to send emails. Do you give up?
An anonymous server is one that strips the IP (Internet Protocol)
address from the email before sending or receiving the email on
anyone’s computer. It makes the email untraceable. If you
are still confused or not sure of why anyone would want this,
then keep on reading and then you can review your options.
Tracing Email Back To The Server
Every time you send emails or receive emails, your POP3 mail
server and your own mail server attaches an address to the mail.
This numeric address is the location from which you sent the email.
Any emails from this fixed IP address can be traced back to the
server from which it came. From there, it is just a matter of
time and a few clicks before any person gets the information they
wanted.
Hiding Your Personal Information
So why would you need to deal with anonymous servers that strip
your IP address from your emails? Well, consider the information
stored on your computer. Many people store their credit card information,
banking information and other personal information on their hard
drive.
Some people have work information that they would not want to
fall into the wrong hands. Hackers can follow your IP address
from an email and target your computer for an attack.
Some Email Servers Do Not Hide Your IP Address
You should know that using an exchange email server such as Hotmail
or Yahoo does not mean that your message is anonymous. They would
like you to think that, but in reality this is not true.
They do not offer encryption and they do not hide the IP address
that is attached to each message. You could find yourself in danger
if you continue using one of these programs for sending out important
information.
Servers Located In Another Country
Anonymous surfing is nothing new. Many people have discovered
ways around their company or school’s firewalls by using a proxy
server to connect with the internet. But in this case the anonymous
servers have more to do with an exchange mail server than simply
trying to log onto Myspace when you are supposed to be working.
There is a reason why most of these servers are located out of
the country. It has to do with stricter privacy laws and ensuring
that the government cannot interfere or monitor emails.

Did You Know This?
I’ve deleted my old emails but it is still not working, anything
else I can try before calling the IT help desk?
Things to try: If you use multiple computers
to access your mail, it is possible that another computer is logged
in, downloading your mail before you are. (This only happens with
POP3 servers.)
Verify you still have connection to the
Internet by opening a webpage. Internet connectivity is required.
If you can’t connect, a reboot may be in order to help reset the
issue. Check that your mail settings are correct in your mail
client.
Some anti-virus programs can change your
mail settings without your knowledge. (Other programs can do this
as well!) Try sending yourself a message from a webmail based
system, such as Yahoo or Hotmail.
Usually, a returned message will include
information on why it was returned. After all this, it’s possible
that the problem is not on your end. Contact your ISP or IT help
desk and check to see if they have any outages.
