Computer Evidence And Interpreting The Data
By Rainbow Spear
Gathering and processing online data using scientifically proven
methods is called computer forensics. It is used to process computer
evidence and interpret that data for further use in court cases
or other areas of investigation.
Digital devices such as computers, mobile phones and memory cards
store information that can be easily accessed by a trained examiner.
Even when a person tries to delete certain information, a digital
device will still retain traces of it. That information is reachable
by a forensic computer examiner.
Companies And Law Enforcement Officers Looking For Evidence
Companies are turning more and more to forensic experts to gather
computer evidence at work. Such evidence is gathered and used
to track how individuals spend their work time and include employees
using email inappropriately, inappropriate computer use, unauthorized
duplication of data and generally disloyal behaviors.
Law enforcement officers use the same evidence-gathering techniques
to place a person at the scene of a crime, find child pornographers
and even track illegal drug sales.
When To Contact A Computer Examiner
What should you do if you suspect inappropriate or illegal activity
on your computer or digital device? First, review your options
and turn off the power and pull the plug out of the socket if
necessary. Next, you should secure the hardware and don’t
allow anyone access to it; security seal it if you possibly can.
Finally, contact a computer examiner.
So now that you know what to do, you should also know what not
to do if you suspect inappropriate or illegal activity on your
computer or digital device. Do not call your IT manager or one
of your technical staff to get them to check things out or become
suspicious of said staff member and fire them on suspicion.
The above analogy is equivalent to tainting evidence by dragging
your tracks, as well as your employee’s tracks, through a crime
scene. What you have just done in effect is entered the crime
scene and left footprints, fingerprints and DNA all over the place.
Courses Available At Universities And Colleges
You can then call a relevant organization and have them try to
wade through evidence which has just been tainted by you and your
staff member. Obviously, this is not a good start, and could make
any case you make inadmissible.
Cyber forensics or computer forensics, as it is sometimes known,
is now taught at many universities and colleges around the world,
and is available to both private individuals as well as the law
enforcement community.
Remember that this is a very specialized service provided by
experts. When you use a computer expert to gather computer evidence,
there shouldn’t be any problems later on.
