Computer Forensic Investigators Searching For Evidence Of Crime
By Rainbow Spear
The science of forensics has been around for many hundreds of
years and a forensic investigation refers to the thorough investigation
of a crime scene.
However, this specialized field has now developed and progressed
to include computers, and there are specific investigative techniques
and tools that are used every day by computer forensic investigators
throughout the world.
A computer forensic crime scene investigator reconstructs the
crime scene by analyzing evidence taken from computers and then
carefully review their options and documenting their findings.
It could put the entire criminal case in jeopardy if only one
piece of evidence is documented incorrectly.
The Need For A Thorough Investigation
No matter if a crime involves people or computers, the onus is
on the forensic investigator to do a thorough job, or run the
risk of potentially setting a criminal free to run the streets
or crawl the web.
Although the first computer crimes first occurred back in the
1970s, computer forensic science is still a relatively new field.
These days, we have more PC and mobile device users then ever,
and the demand and need for computer forensics law enforcement
investigations is increasing as well.
Detecting Evidence Left Behind On Computer Systems And Mobile Devices
Devices such as laptop computers, mobile phones and PDA’s with
the capability of storing pictures, getting online and connecting
to e-mail, more and more often require the need of a forensic
investigator to determine the action that needs to be taken in
criminal litigation cases, corporate espionage and accusations
of child pornography.
Did you know that acts of terrorism as well as the behavior of
disgruntled employees and the movement of cheating spouses all
have one thing in common? They each frequently use computer systems
and mobile devices to help them with their unethical crimes and
actions. Evidence is always left behind with these activities,
which of course is easily detected through the process of digital
forensics.
New Technologies Expand The Need For New Ways Of Investigating Crimes
Previously, computer forensic investigators focused on personal
computers and laptop systems as their primary target for review.
Within the past few years however, the computer forensic field
has been forced to broaden its scope, investigative techniques
and tools in order to keep up with the varied personal technology
being used by average citizens.
Items such as mobile phones, PDA’s and GPS systems are being
used on a daily basis and can contain important information from
text messages, emails, phone logs and prior GPS destination coordinates.
The term digital forensics is becoming very popular as the computer
forensic field expands and further incorporates the analysis of
new technologies.
Tracing Email Back To The Source
Trained computer forensic investigators can preserve phone call
logs received from cell phones and present them as evidence by
maintaining a strict chain of custody. Each and every email sent
from any given source to a specific destination leaves coded information
embedded in that email.
This information is in the email header. A forensic computer
examiner can analyze the header and trace it back to the Internet
protocol (IP) address from which it was sent.
