Computer Instruction For Better Computer Security
By Dirk C Wallace
The hardware that comes with your new PC is very easy to set
up with some computer instruction. Most manufacturers now color
code all of their cables and plugs so that you can get it set
up and ready to use in minutes.
The hard part of set up usually occurs after you have everything
hooked up and are trying to figure out which of the pre loaded
programs you need to keep and which one’s are just meaningless
advertisements. At this point, you may be thinking that some computer
instruction might come in handy.
Security Software Trials
There will be a lot of icons on your desktop that aren’t needed.
One set that you should pay attention to though, are the PC security
software trials. You should choose one of these as the cornerstone
of your computers security system.
Fortunately, home computer security is actually quite simple.
Professional computer instruction is not really necessary in order
to secure your home computer system. All that you really need
is a basic understanding of how home computer security works.
Malware Is Nasty Software
Malware can be loosely defined as any software that has an intentional
negative impact on your computer’s performance. Particularly nasty
viruses may replicate or mutate over time and may send copies
of themselves to your friends and family via your email address
book. Some viruses can seriously damage your entire operating
system, forcing you to lose all of your stored information. Spyware
is another form of malware.
Spyware tracks your computer usage for any of a number of reasons.
Some spyware follows your online shopping habits in order to create
personalized popups and other content. More malicious spyware
logs your keystrokes in order to steal your passwords or other
sensitive information.
Protect Your Computer With An Antivirus Program
Although this all sounds quite scary, fighting back is easier
than you might imagine and no computer instruction is necessary.
Before you ever log onto the internet, your computer should be
fully protected by an antivirus program.
Two of the biggest names in antivirus software are Norton and
McAfee. However, these are not the only options. The name brand
is not nearly as important as the features and functionality.
You want to find an antivirus program that will continuously monitor
your system for threats and scan all files prior to uploading
or downloading.
Automatic Updates And Automatic Scans
You also want a program that will allow you to schedule automatic
full system scans on a timeline that works for you. The program
should also automatically update from time to time, as new viruses
are released daily.
Computer firewalls are the guards that stand at the doorway of
your computer. While detailed computer instruction would be necessary
to gain a technical understanding of how they work, you can get
a basic idea by using this image. The guard at the door determines
who gets in and who gets out.
If something that isn’t on your list tries to go in or out, the
guard asks you what you want to do and allows you to make a judgment
decision. Ultimately, your computer firewall works for you and
monitors the inbound and outbound flow of information from your
PC. No PC security software is complete without it.
Bundled Security Software
Antispyware software is easy to find. This software is often
bundled into a package with antivirus and firewall PC security
software. If not, antispyware programs can be downloaded from
the internet. The purpose of antispyware software is to scan your
system for possible spyware and remove the offending items.
The best way to figure out which PC security software you like
the best is to use the free trials offers that will come pre-loaded
on you new PC. You don’t need any advanced computer instruction
to figure these systems out, as the directions are usually very
self explanatory. Once your free trial period is up, you can decide
if you want to go ahead and subscribe to the service, or if you
want to try another.
No matter what you choose, you need to make sure that you always
have some kind of computer firewall active on your machine. This
will prevent major headaches later on down the road.
