Computer Security Tool To Safeguard Your Computer
By Joel Wannamaker
Ensuring that you choose the proper computer security tool is
just as important as realizing that you need to choose one at
all. Multiple varieties of viruses, adware and spyware can cripple
your network and system if you are not properly prepared to combat
them.
Home computer security is quite different from other applications
such as data computer security and business computer security.
For this reason, you need to make sure that the security tools
that you implement are appropriate and strong enough to meet your
unique business computer security needs.
Basic Home Computer Security Tools
While basic home computer security tools like firewalls and antispyware
software are perfect for most PC users, if you are administrating
a network then you should consider something better. A computer
security tool that can be customized to meet the unique security
needs of your company is the ideal way to protect your interests.
There is a process known as security hardening or system hardening
that network administrators should strongly consider following.
This process attempts to maximize network security by closing
back doors and other potential weak spots in the computer’s programming.
System Hardening Procedures
Typically, system hardening procedures involve a number of tasks.
One is the elimination of all unnecessary programs and files.
Every program has a weak spot in its security, meaning that the
more programs you have installed the more chances you provide
a hacker to find an entry point.
System hardening also changes the default settings provided by
the operating system for typical users to more secure settings.
System hardening also includes renaming the administrator account,
disabling the guest account and creating secure passwords for
each account.
System Hardening Tools For Your Network
You can perform system hardening procedures on your own, and
by their nature some tasks must be completed this way. However,
unless you are an extremely experienced network administrator,
you may find that it is both simpler and more thorough to use
a commercial computer security tool to assist you.
A wide variety of security hardening tools are currently on the
market. A simple Google search will reveal hundreds. Which tool
you choose will depend on several factors. Which operating system
are you using? Windows is the platform most often hardened, as
it is prone to the most security holes.
Automates Bulk Of The Process
However, Mac and Unix hardeners are also available. How much
of the process do you want to control and how much do you want
to have automated? If you are new to the network security field,
you may want to purchase a hardening tool that automates the bulk
of the process. More experienced network administrators may want
more control over the procedure.
Though you may be able to invest huge sums of money in a computer
security tool, it is important to remember that the system is
only as good as its weakest link. Most of the time, that weak
link is your employees.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve invested in the greatest computer
security systems in the world, if you employees do not adhere
to the necessary protocols and procedures that are laid out for
them you will be vulnerable.
Make sure that educating your employees about the dangers of
leaving gaps in the system. This is the only way to guarantee
a leak proof system.
