DSL Service For High Speed Internet
By Joan Kickosawa
The strange thing about DSL service in America is that it’s slower
and more expensive than other countries. For instance, Sweden’s
100 mbps only costs $10.79/month, while our cheapest DSL services
cost $15 for 256 to 768 kbps!
Denmark and Switzerland both have prices under $15, while places
like France, the Netherlands and New Zealand hover just a dollar
more than us, yet with ten times’ the speed. The US government
is currently working on a solution to this growing problem that
threatens to lag us behind in the global marketplace.
High Speed DSL Internet Service
Are you wondering what high speed, DSL internet service is and
how it compares to dial up access and cable high speed? Basically,
a DSL modem transfers data through your telephone line like dial
up, but much more quickly and efficiently. Unlike dial up service,
DSL allows you to access the internet and talk on the phone line
at the same time.
You can use your existing phone line, without needing any new
wiring and the modem will be provided in your installation package.
Even though cable is said to be faster, particularly fiber optic
cable, DSL services are comparable in service, cheaper in price
and continually get more favorable customer reviews.
Cable High Speed Is An Alternative
There are two main alternatives to DSL service; cable high speed
and wireless high speed internet services. Cable excels because
it isn’t limited by distance like DSL, it has a wider availability
in a diverse range of neighborhoods and connections are a bit
faster.
One caveat is that you need a home that is cable-ready with the
proper wires and jacks. Also, connection speeds can lag if too
many people are using the cable service at the same time. Wireless
internet can transmit high speed internet service over long distances
and works with lightning-quick speed compared to any of the alternatives.
DSL Is Often Cheaper Than Other High Speed Services
DSL service is extremely popular in European cities, where much
of the population is centered around a central switching hub and
members can all gain quick access to the internet. Even though
there are other high speed internet services out there, DSL is
offered cheaper, with more reliable speeds in the cities, than
what cable service provides.
Recently, Ericsson has demonstrated DSL that functions at 500
mbps, compared to the usual 8 mbps in the US, 26 mbps in Japan,
25 mbps in Germany, 44 mbps in France or 100 mbps in Sweden. This
exciting new development shows serious promise for DSL technology,
keeping it in the race for supremacy with cable.

Did You Know This? You have bought yourself a brand new computer and now you want
to get connected to the internet. It is not as simple as just
clicking an icon on your computer’s desktop. You have to browse
through your local internet services providers to find a company
that works best for your needs.
In the past it was your telephone company and it meant a dial-up
connection. These days it is all about DSL or high speed cable
internet connections. Thankfully most places offer a choice when
it comes to picking out an internet service provider.
