Better Employment Tips
By Christine Wales
Finding a job can be a job in itself. You can spend countless
hours at career fairs or with a career services provider only
to find that the job listings do not meet your expectations or
that you don’t have the necessary skills training that the market
requires.
It can be a frustrating process that leaves you feeling rejected,
hopeless and overwhelmed. However, there are things that you can
do to make finding employment less of a hassle.
Look At Your Resume
Finding a lucrative job begins with looking at your resume. With
employers continually receiving hundreds of resumes, you must
make sure that yours hooks an employer’s attention within a 5-second
glance. A great way to do this is to use job titles and skill
headings that relate to and match the jobs you want.
The design of your resume must highlight the most important information
about your work experience, skills and education. At first glance
this information forms the image that employers have of your skills
and abilities, to review their options. You will generate many
more interviews by tweaking your resume and cover letter so that
they address the specific skills each employer requests.
Focus On Meeting Job Requirements
One common mistake people make when writing their CV is to focus
on themselves, their abilities and their lives. This is not what
a company is looking for. They want to know what you have to offer
them, not what you are hoping to gain. Quantify your accomplishments
and highlight what you have done but clearly state why you are
the employee of their dreams.
Most people in the business world begin their day between 8 and
9 AM, so do not sleep in until noon and expect to find a job.
While looking for employment, try to keep regular business hours
and designate each day of the week to a specific task.
Daily Tasks To Help You Get That Job
For example, Mondays can be the day you explore career resources
like the newspaper, internet, job bank or unemployment center.
On Tuesdays you can write cover letters and distribute resumes.
Find a routine that works for you and stick to it so that you
stay motivated and create as many opportunities for yourself as
possible. Catching up on your soaps may be tempting, but remind
yourself that you still have bills to pay.
Be Optimistic And Realistic
Being realistic is fact of life when you are looking for a job
in today’s economy. Understand that you may not get the title
or pay that you want. Yet it is great to be optimistic, and certainly
you should apply for your dream job.
With such fierce competition, you may need to consider jobs at
all levels, especially if you have been out of the workforce for
a few years. Many big companies will require that you start at
a lower level before promoting you to a leadership position.
Networking Helps You Meet Many People
Most of us would rather crawl under a rock than job search but
unless your last name is "Trump" or "Gates",
finding employment is simply a fact of life. Networking is one
of the best ways to find a new job, but it involves talking to
lots of people. However, finding new career opportunities depends
on your ability to be aggressive.
Get on the phone, find out who knows who, and get your name out
there. We have all heard the cliché "it’s not what you know
but who you know." It may be sad, yet it’s true. Contact
former colleagues, your friends, or use any other "in"
that you may have. Any edge that you can give yourself is a bonus
as you look for the perfect job.
