High Speed Internet Service Computer Software Web Tips Guide
High Speed Internet Service Includes The Latest Fiber Optic Cable
By Joan Kickosawa
Did you know that America has one of the slowest high speed internet
service speeds worldwide? The average download speed is around
1.97 mbps, compared to 61 in Japan, 49 in Korea and 17 in France.
In fact, 15% of all Americans still use dial up access! In Sweden,
there are connection speeds of up to 100 mbps but even more impressive
is Malaysia’s rumored Velchip project, which plans to offer 60
million people unlimited high speed internet that connects at
an astounding 224 mbps! Brace yourself. They say the cost will
be only $1.58 US dollars per month! Do you suddenly have the feeling
we’re living in a third world country after all?
Higher Wiring Costs In The US
The reality is that super high speed internet service hasn’t
arrived in America just yet... but why? One answer is that wiring
customers is costly in the US. The urban density in countries
like South Korea makes it easier to hook up a large number of
people all at once, compared to America’s far-reaching suburbs,
which require each individual household to have its own fiber
optic cable directly connected.
Another answer is that our competitive laws have mandated that
companies like Verizon and Comcast internet service bundle their
services to encourage competition, which gives these oligarchic
structures the ability to charge higher rates. In other countries,
companies must unbundle to share their lines and facilities. Additionally,
the US does not currently offer government subsidies for broadband
connections or mandate lower profit margins for telecom companies,
which keep the prices high.
Integrated Services Digital Network
So what high speed internet service is available? Currently,
there are over one million lines offering Integrated Services
Digital Network, which is offered by phone companies. Despite
the fact that it reaches 128 kbps, which is extremely fast compared
to DSL services, it has never really caught on with the general
public due to the high cost, which is $30 to $100 per month, with
a setup fee of $125 and an ISDN modem cost of $250+.
Businesses often hook up to ISDN for video conferencing and all
the other complex computer networking they need to do. Similarly,
a T-1 connection is commonly used for business internet services,
which runs at 1.544 mbps, although the prices start as low as
$345 and go all the way up to $1,500.
The Latest High Speed Internet Service Option
Fiber optic cable is the latest high speed internet service option,
which currently connects up to 30 megabits, which is 2 to 3 times
faster than the best cable or DSL services.
With fiber optic service, a fiber optic cable uses light, which
forms an electromagnetic carrier wave to transfer information
from the user to the internet. The availability is not universal
everywhere in the US yet since the technology is fairly new, but
Verizon Fios remains the top carrier with over 1 million subscribers.

Did You Know This?
Internet services can mean a lot of things but most often you
will hear the terms used to refer to how you gain access to the
internet. In the days of dial-up your internet service provider
was your local telephone company.
Things have certainly changed for the better. Now you have the
option of a high speed cable internet connection or DSL. Both
provide fast connection speeds and are easy to have installed.
