International Organization On Computer Evidence Helps To Create
Rules And Regulations For Handling Evidence
By Rainbow Spear
The International Organization on Computer Evidence (IOCE) is
an organization whose main goal is to help create the rules and
regulations that deal with the handling of evidence.
If you haven’t done so already, it would be advantageous
to your company if at least one person has the technical and legal
knowledge suitable to grasp all aspects of computer evidence and
data gathering.
If your network is ever attacked and the perpetrator is caught,
then first hand knowledge of evidence gathering can help to provide
solid evidence and help bring the case to court. The IOCE has
certain guidelines that should be followed.
General Definitions Of Data Evidence
Regarding data evidence, the IOCE has some general definitions
relating to what data evidence is and how it’s handled during
forensic investigations. First off, digital evidence is considered
any information that is stored or transmitted in binary form that
may be called upon in court. Original digital evidence refers
to any physical items and the data that is associated with those
items at the time of seizure.
Duplicate digital evidence is an accurate reproduction of all
the data contained from the original physical item. A copy is
an accurate reproduction of all the original information contained
in the data, independent of the original physical item.
Preserving The Evidence
There are a few general principles that apply to the recovery
of data during a computer investigation, set forth by the International
Organization on Computer Evidence. First, when seizing data as
evidence, there are certain actions that must be taken in order
to review and preserve the evidence, so it will be admissible
in a court of law.
When it becomes necessary for an individual to access computer
evidence, that person should be specially trained for that purpose.
All activities relating to the search, seizure, access, storage
and/or transfer of data as evidence must be fully documented and
preserved and made available for review.
Collection And Handling
If you have a question about what the system, personnel, equipment,
procedures or accommodation requirements are for the collection
and handling of digital evidence, there is no better authority
on the subject than the International Organization on Computer
Evidence.
In order to maintain the evidence in its most pristine form,
the IOCE’s methods are what must be done every step of the way.
From gathering data at the crime scene through presentation of
said data in court, keeping the evidence as it should be is the
investigator’s number one priority.

Give Me Just The Computer Forensic Facts.....
There are very few people that do not doubt their career choices
at sometime in their lives. If you are doubting your career choice
you are not alone. It may be the hours you are working. It may
be the pay.
It may even be that the job has become dull and lost its appeal.
You can change careers no matter what age you are. One growing
field is that of computer forensics. If you have watched any crime
shows then you have seen a bit of what this field has to offer.
