Internet Protocol Helps Communication Between Computers

By Calista Joyner

Data oriented protocol used for transferring and communicating data across networks or LANs (local area networks) is called internet protocol (IP). Or, more simply put, it is a set of rules that govern the format of messages that are sent between computers.

This type of protocol is usually accomplished by using the most widely recognized available connections, known as either an ethernet or internet connection. Naturally, technology is continuing to grow at a pretty rapid pace; remember when the only way to connect the computer was through dial-up connection?

Faster And Better Connections

At the time, no one thought anything would top that; until along came a faster connection referred to as 28K. We couldn’t top that either but it has been topped and will continue to get faster and better.

The internet is a very successful worldwide set of interconnected networks that have the ability to communicate with each other. Ethernet is a data linkage that is used to govern the network protocol layer known as IP.

Local Area Networks And Unique Global IP Address

Essentially, ethernet consists of a series of computer technologies and properties used across LAN’s (local area networks), providing each user a unique global IP address. IP is basically concerned with the ultimate destination of information while ethernet is concerned with the next immediate step in file transfer protocol or data protocol.

The industry has continued to grow at a rapid pace; at times it appears to be in quantum leaps to keep up with the rising and new demands of a very diverse group of people. Internet protocol is also growing in those same types of quantum leaps, as new link facilities and applications have been emerging on a continuous basis.

All of the computers on the internet communicate with each other using Transmission Control Protocol or as previously noted, IP, meaning data is sent from the server to the client and vice-versa.

HTTP(Hypertext Transfer) And FTP(File Transfer Protocol)

There are several different types of protocols relating to the internet; for instance you have probably noticed the http in a URL but you may not know that it refers to Hypertext Transfer or perhaps you have seen FTP (file transfer protocol).

The file transfer protocol is an excellent method to transfer (upload and send) files from one computer to another on the internet. Although you can transfer files using email it is not always a good choice when you review your options and realise the file size is large or when you need to transfer several files.

The main objectives for using FTP with internet protocol are to promote file and program sharing and efficiently transfer data from one computer to another. It also encourages indirect or implicit use of remote computers and provides a common platform for file storage among different hosts.

Did You Know This About Dedicated Servers?

Do I need a dedicated server?
If you are interested in providing information to a large client base, then you may need a dedicated server. If the information you are processing contains confidential items, such as personal or credit information, then you probably should have a dedicated server.

Whether or not you choose to rent a server or host your own depends on your capability and budget. Owning a server will be less expensive, but means that you are responsible for keeping it up and running. Some individuals and companies will choose to rent a server, and pay someone else to handle the headaches.
