Investigating Online Scams
By Rainbow Spear
Investigating any crime case can be exhausting. Primarily because
you have to be very careful about not compromising the evidence,
when collecting items from the crime scene. Well, just imagine
how difficult it would be to carry out an official inquiry if
the crime scene kept moving.
What if once you tracked it down, you found that it had already
moved to a different location? That is pretty much what it is
like, when the crime scene being investigated is online. Online
scammers are able to stay just far enough ahead of the law, to
escape capture.
Phishing Scams With Fake Websites
Phishing scams are sent through e-mails posing as a trusted entity
such as Paypal or e-Bay and are growing more common on the internet.
The phishing e-mail might say that your account has expired or
there have been problems with your account and they need you to
update your information.
They will go as far as to create a website and give you the link
to it so that they can collect your personal information. These
types of phishing scams have hooked many people, so it’s worth
investigating your e-mail origins these days.
Scammers Targeting More Victims
Internet scamming crimes are often hard to investigate because
there are just so many of them out there. It is also difficult,
because scammers are constantly changing their tactics and approach.
This makes it harder and harder to recognize the scam before it
is much too late.
There are numerous frauds and scams that have been around for
centuries, but with our ever growing and changing technology,
the scammers are able to target more and more victims. With internet
scams, the victims are completely destroyed by someone they have
never even seen.
If In Doubt, Then Do Not Give Out Sensitive Information
Do enough research to review your options and know without a
doubt that anyone, whether it is a company or an individual is
legitimate and that they are exactly who they say they are. If
you have any doubts or hunches, then do not give them sensitive
information.
In today’s internet savvy world, it is easy to understand the
hesitation and reservations people are having about releasing
personal information without at least looking into the matter
a bit further, and most people and companies understand the situation.
Any legitimate business would rather have a safe customer than
a sorry one.
Seeking Help From The Authorities
There is help out there if you are a victim of a scam or if you
are suspicious that you have been contacted by a scammer. It is
just going to take a little investigating on your part to see
who you should contact.
But today, as more and more people are growing aware that internet
scamming is on the rise, there are more and more authorities willing
to research the matter. The quicker the investigations start,
the quicker the scam can be stopped.
So don’t be afraid to lodge a complaint. After all, an ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Give Me Just The Fraud Facts.....
What is the penalty for fraud?
The penalty for fraud is of course repaying
the amount of money stolen if it is applicable to the situation.
Other penalties include jail time, probation, a criminal record
and sometimes community service.
New laws regarding internet fraud and conviction
can mean that the person is not allowed to have a computer or
be on the internet. In today’s digital world that is a severe
punishment.
