ISP Internet Service Options With Annoying Advertising

By Joan Kickosawa

Remember the nineties when ISP internet service was literally just given away for free? It seemed you couldn't go anywhere without getting a disc with 150 hours of free internet service from America Online! Then the discs for Juno and Net Zero arrived by magic, offering free internet services all the time, provided that you used 10 hours or less each month.

Following the success of these companies, tons of start ups opened shop and offered free ad-based internet. Today, almost all of those companies have gone bankrupt, although there are still a few free providers out there.

Free Internet Services

While you're looking for internet service that costs little to nothing, be aware that there are some drawbacks. What you save in money, you undoubtedly lose in quality. First of all, unless you have a laptop with free wireless, your home desktop will be confined to free dial up access, which is very, very, very slow!

You'll be able to get a cup of coffee, use the restroom, let the dog out and fix yourself a sandwich before you've connected to the internet. Then, if you wish to do anything beyond check your email, you can expect minutes of waiting time for webpages to load. Forget about watching any sort of video because it's excruciating!

The Perfect Irresistible Ad

Additionally, many of the ISP internet service options that come for free are downloaded with advertising. If you have a high threshold for new offers being crammed down your throat, flashed across your screen and interrupting your web browsing, then this may not matter to you.

Yet even for the highly tolerant, it could be dismaying to think that one's every move is being monitored by some omniscient, super-marketer who is ready to pounce with the perfect irresistible ad, based on the web user's browsing preferences. You're bound to encounter ads with any internet services provider, but none as rampant as the freebies. (Hey, they have to make their money somehow!)

To get free ISP internet service, Net Zero is still top dog, offering a free email address and 10 free hours of dial up access each month, plus unlimited additional usage for $10 per month if you go over your allotment.

Lighting Speeds To Download Movies

At www.copper.net, you can receive unlimited internet and email for $10/month (or $4.95 for 6 months on special), in addition to free customer support and privacy protection. At www.basicisp.net, you can have free tech support, unlimited time and no contract for $6.95/month (or an accelerated dial up service for $9.95/month!)

At www.bamnet.com, you will have free internet access with no monthly fee, but simply pay one cent per minute (bought in prepaid $20 chunks, like prepay cell phone service). In NYC, you can get free service from www.metconnect.com and in Washington, you can get free access from www.nocharge.com.
