Outgoing Mail Server and SMTP To Process Email
By Joan Kickosawa
Did you know that there can be a difference between an incoming
mail server and an outgoing mail server? You should be able to
differentiate between the two because it can make a world of difference
if something goes wrong.
For young people, an email is absolutely a must for their personal
lives. For adults, it is usually a matter of business and they
use it primarily for work or to pay bills. But if something goes
wrong, then you will need to talk to someone who can help you
fix the problem. It does not hurt to know some of the terminology.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
The mail server software is actually called an SMTP. SMTP stands
for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sure it sounds complicated,
but in reality the mail server SMTP is quite easy to understand.
It is responsible for sending your emails. It is what tells the
program how to send and receive the emails for that particular
program.
The email server for Windows is going to be a lot different than
what it is for the Linux mail server because it is a different
operating system. But you probably will not be setting the server
up yourself, simply using it to transmit and receive your messages.
POP3 Mail Server Address
If there is a problem with your outgoing mail server or you are
trying to set up the SMTP, then you will need some information
from your Internet Service Provider, such as your POP3 mail server
address.
The address will look something like this: mail.blank.com. You
will need to type in the information for both the incoming SMTP
and the outgoing SMTP. The email program will use this address
to send your mail to the server where it is then re-directed to
the proper place and the right people.

Check For Outgoing Mail Server Information
So what do you do if you are not able to send messages but you
can receive messages? The first step is making sure that the outgoing
mail server information was entered correctly. There are occasions
when the outgoing POP3 mail server address is not the same as
the incoming.
If those are correct, then you may want to see if your connection
is timing out. If it is, then check your internet connection.
The last step is to contact your server administrator for help.
They can usually fix the problem directly over the phone by walking
you through the steps one at a time. You may have just missed
something during the setup process.

Did You Know This?
How do I set up my Microsoft Outlook?
In order to setup Microsoft Outlook, you need
to know what type of servers are being used on your network. If you
are a home user, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can give you
this information. If you are in a business or campus network, the
IT (Information Technology) department can provide you with the
correct information.
Required information will include: type and address for both
incoming and outgoing mail servers, your user name, and your password.
The last two are critical in that they securely identify you to
the server, allowing only you to get your mail. Once the information
is in hand, Microsoft Outlook will walk you through the setup
process, prompting you to fill in the blanks.
What is an outgoing email server?
An outgoing email server
is responsible for delivering your message to
the appropriate location. SMTP (Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol) is the standard for transmitting
messages across the Internet. Where as, the incoming
email server has to worry about who you are, and where
to keep your messages, the outgoing email server has but
one job: delivery.
