Protocols Guide Communication
By Calista Joyner
It is a fairly common word, more so among IT people, but you
have likely heard it before even if you are not into technology.
It is referring to protocols, which are formats for transmitting
data between computers or other devices.
There are several things that file transfer protocol (FTP) dictates,
such as how the sending computer will advise that it has finished
the message and how the computer on the receiving end signifies
that it has indeed received a message. It also determines the
routing protocol, if error checking was done and what was the
type and the method of data compression, if any.
Of course there are other types of protocols, including code
of conduct and behavior normally in the form of ceremony or social
etiquette. This is most often seen and observed by heads of state
and diplomats and was likely the most common form prior to the
computer technology.
Product Development Protocols
Product development, with its statements about features and benefits
that a new product must have, is prepared by consulting all parties
to the project. However, these days when you see it, it will probably
have something to do with network protocol or something similar.
Even the most standard form of protocol has many different varieties
offered to programmers and each one will have specific disadvantages
and advantages. For instance, some are less complicated, some
are quicker such as the transmission control protocol and others
are more dependable.
For the people that use them, the only aspect concerning protocols
that is important to them is that their device or computer needs
the correct ones in order to review your options to support and
communicate with other devices or computers. It can also be implemented
into the software or the hardware, or added later.
Ability To Communicate Worldwide Using Protocols
To get a little better idea of what it takes to keep all of these
devices in good working order, imagine the number of people communicating
in the world, the number of different languages they use, the
number of different machines used, the number of ways they transmit
data and the different software that is used. We would never be
able to communicate worldwide if there were no standards governing
or communication protocol.
Many people think that the internet and World Wide Web are the
same thing, but think of it this way: the internet is to the World
Wide Web as Europe is to France, one is the container and the
other is an item in the container.
So, the internet is really a combination of several smaller digital
sub networks that share the computers and cables. And, the language
that the different sub networks speak are called protocols.

Did You Know This About Dedicated Servers?
Do I need a dedicated server?
If you are interested in providing information
to a large client base, then you may need a dedicated server. If the
information you are processing contains confidential items, such as
personal or credit information, then you probably should have a
dedicated server.
Whether or not you choose to rent a server or host your own depends
on your capability and budget. Owning a server will be less expensive,
but means that you are responsible for keeping it up and running.
Some individuals and companies will choose to rent a server, and
pay someone else to handle the headaches.
