Security Software Protecting Your Data
By Dirk C Wallace
If you only use your computer to check out the news or perhaps
to email friends and family, then you may feel that you do not
need any type of security software installed on your PC.
However, even casual computer users can be the subject of identity
theft or at the very least, malicious software that is capable
of wreaking havoc on your computer. Therefore, no matter what
you use the computer for, you need to check into different types
of security options that are available to you.
Hackers Looking For Security Holes In Your Computer
While many of these professional hackers are in it for political
or even moral agendas, they too had to start somewhere. Since
they need to have the patience of Job, survival instincts of a
cornered wild animal and an encyclopedic knowledge of security
weaknesses in many different systems, whether it is Vista Ultimate,
Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, XP Professional or
any other operating system, their skills have to be learned and
honed to perfection. What better way to practice than on the average
person?
Many times companies have all of their computers on a network
and a system administrator oversees the network. If the administrator
is not vigilant about security measures, then many times a hacker
can find their way inside the network.
Security Software For Computers On A Network
Sometimes this happens because many of the server systems have
default passwords that are well known to hackers. If you have
any information on a networked computer, investing in some type
of security software can be to your benefit. Also, if possible
restrict your computer access with your own password and do not
leave the PC unattended without activating your password.
Achieving good computer security can seem like a daunting task.
Fortunately, there are some general steps you can take to make
it a little easier. Use antivirus software and keep it updated.
Most of those types of programs can be figured to check for updates
automatically and it is a good idea to use this feature. Windows
downloads include several different programs that you can check
out to see if they will fit your needs.
Password Protection On Your Computer
The most often used method of system security is by single static
passwords; however, most people create a password that is short,
based on a topic close to them (birthdays, children’s names, etc.)
and more often than not they do not contain any numbers, only
letters, and these types of passwords are easy for hackers to
find.
Most major software companies include some type of security software
in their programs. For example, in the Vista operating system
there is a protected mode while using Internet Explorer, as well
as improved Windows Defender capabilities.
