Speed Reading Helps To Improve Comprehension

By Calista Joyner

As people increasingly struggle to keep their heads above the flood of information that is constantly flowing toward them, many are finding that speed reading is an essential skill to have and to hone.

With each passing year, it is more essential for people to be able to quickly sort through the data and take what they need from it in the fastest way possible.

While more and more information is being presented through various multi-media formats, the fact is that written text is the best way to be able to blast through large amounts of information, especially if you are a speed reader.

Setting Yourself Apart From The Competition

The ability to read quickly is something that does not come naturally and is not learned in the classroom when children are first taught to read. But, it is a skill that can benefit people in many ways, from excelling in advanced studies in school and preparing for examinations, to setting oneself apart from the competition in business settings.

In fact, a survey of many successful business people and government leaders showed that a high percentage of them had taken a reading speed class at some point in their education or later training, and attributed part of their success to that skill.

Better Comprehension For Speed Readers

For people who love to read, speed reading is a natural complement to their drive to learn all they can from books. Knowing how to read faster allows people to not only move through written materials faster, but it has also been shown that comprehension is much higher for speed readers than the comprehension levels of someone who reads at average to slow speeds.

For decades, the Evelyn Wood reading courses have taught people how to become proficient at reading faster. In some ways, people must first un-learn some of the things they were taught in grammar school about reading, in order to gain reading speed improvement.

Learning The Fundamentals Of Reading Faster

The experts in the field say that anyone can learn how to read fast and develop better comprehension at the same time. The skill of learning to speed read is not limited to people with a high reading IQ, or to anyone who might be considered a reading genius. Indeed, the experts insist that any person who puts forth the effort to learn the fundamentals of reading faster and then uses those principals, can become a reading speedster.

There are many different ways that people can learn to acquire reading speed improvement. There are many software reading speed programs from which to choose.

In addition, for those who enjoy learning in classroom settings, there are speed reading classes they can attend. For those with limited budgets, there are even free speed reading courses that are available on the internet now.

Practice Makes Perfect Skills

Developing your reading skills is very much like any skill one wants to master, in that one must practice the techniques on a regular basis. This can be particularly challenging for people who must read in their work or school, because during the period when the new skills are not developed, it is tempting to lean on old reading habits.

This can slow down the progress of integrating the new reading methods, but is worth the effort in the end if you want to speed your read!

How is speed reading measured?
Speed reading is measured by timing the reader as he or she reads through a selection of material. After the time is up the reader will be tested on his or her overall comprehension of the material. If they make less than 50% of the questions then that test is considered a failure.

Speed reading is difficult to test because a large part of the comprehension depends on the reader’s interest. A text book may be difficult to quickly read as there is strange terminology or a lack of interest on the participants’ behalf.
