Spyware Computer Software Web Tips Guide
Spyware Detection Tips
By Dirk C Wallace
Do you know that while you’re surfing the Net in your living
room someone on the other side of the world could be stealing
your identity? It’s possible thanks to spyware. These programs
secretly install themselves onto your computer and collect information
about you, like your browsing habits and your personal financial
information that you give out when you shop online.
These programs can also alter computer settings, resulting in
slow connection speeds, different home pages, the loss of functionality
of other programs and even your Internet connection.
Spyware Uses Infected Computers For Commercial Gain
The installation of spyware often involves Internet Explorer
because of its popularity. Unlike viruses and worms, these programs
do not usually self-replicate. However, the programs use infected
computers for commercial gain by delivering unsolicited popup
advertisements, stealing personal information like credit card
numbers and monitoring activity for marketing purposes, or routing
web searches to advertising sites.
These programs do not spread like a computer virus or worm and
it’s unlikely that an infected system will transmit the infection
to other computers. The distributors of these software programs
usually present the program as a useful utility or as a helpful
software agent, or are bundled with shareware or other downloadable
software that the user unwittingly downloads and installs.
Unacceptable Software Behavior On Your Computer
The tech sector has responded to this problem by developing new
security software. However, these products may also inadvertently
disable wanted programs. To address this issue, the Anti-Spyware
Coalition is developing a standard for what constitutes "spam"
or unacceptable software behavior.
It’s important to note that some analysts have warned against
vendors selling anti-spyware software as a standalone product
because most security software products include anti-spyware utilities
and they believe that customers should not be paying extra for
it.
Free Anti-Spyware Tool
Microsoft even offers a free anti-spyware tool. There are new
programs popping up every day. Uninstaller Software claims to
be capable of removing programs that could not be removed by Microsoft
Windows Add/Remove program.
For security protection against these software programs, only
download material from reputable sites and always thoroughly read
the End User License Agreement. Most people click yes without
reading the terms and agree to install this software without knowing
it.
Scan Your Computer To Detect And Remove Unwanted Software
When a popup appears on your computer read it before you click
anything. Although antivirus software isn’t foolproof, they can
protect your system in real time. Even with antivirus software
and a firewall system, scan your computer periodically to detect
and remove any unwanted software. Programs like Spybot Search
& Destroy can help and is available free of charge.
In Canada, these intrusive spyware programs have become such
a problem to online safety that the government has voted in favor
of an anti-spam bill that includes email and text message spam,
software programs that are secretly installed on users’ computers,
the use of emails and websites that trick users into thinking
they are visiting a trusted site (phishing), as well as the use
of computers infected by viruses to send spam (botnets).
If enacted into law, an electronic commercial message without
the prior consent of the recipient would be illegal. Marketers
would be required to meet several requirements, including identifying
the sender and providing a mechanism to allow consumers to unsubscribe
from receipt of further messages. This is just one way that governments
are responding to the need for greater internet security.

Did You Know?
How can I ensure my personal safety if I want to meet someone
from online?
The internet has become a great way to meet
people. It allows people to come into contact with others from
across the nation or even in another country. But it does come
with its fair share of risks. If you are interested in meeting
someone from online then you need to take some safety precautions.
The first is to not immediately suggest
meeting face-to-face. You should take some time exchanging email
messages first to get to know the person. The next stage is talking
on instant messenger. This allows you to really ask spur of the
moment questions and get answers.
If the person is being very vague or noncommittal
on answers, this is the perfect opportunity to stop communication.
The next stage is talking on the phone. Ideally you should talk
to them on your cell phone. You do not want them to have your
physical location information yet.
After a few phone conversations you can
then arrange to meet during the day in a very public location
where lots of people will be. Always make sure you drive yourself
there and do not ride with the person. Also, make sure and tell
people who you are meeting, where you are meeting them and what
time you are meeting them.
That way if something were to happen, someone
else would know where you are at and who you are meeting. If that
meeting goes well then set up other meetings and enjoy getting
to know this person. If at any time you feel threatened or that
maybe the person is lying to you, immediately get away and end
the communication.
