Technical Support Services Are Essential To Business Success

By Dirk C Wallace

Technical support services are essential for large organizations and small businesses to effectively run information technology, to keep everything running smoothly. If staff need help or technical advice, the technical support staff will be there with solutions.

The range of staff within technical support may range from call center staff, to computer, network and software engineers, meeting the needs of staff within the company.

Dedicated Companies Supplying Technical Support Services

There are also companies supplying external support services. These services may be needed by large corporations and small businesses alike. A small business may need yo review their options and not able to afford to hire full time technical staff and use the services of an external company when needed.

Many small and large organisations need technical support, as many of their information processes are dependent on computer processes and there is always a need to keep systems running smoothly.

The Need For Technical Support

Technical support services is an essential and critical service most businesses require in this age of computer based organizations and businesses.

Most medium sized businesses have an information technology department, usually a second level sub-organization of the business, with a vice-president of IT directly answerable to the president. This department is typically sub-divided into a development unit, an operations unit, and technical support services.

The development unit is responsible for the development of software and computer systems for the organization, and will include programmers, testers, analysts, implementors, technical writers, even system purchasers.

Day To Day Operations

Database designers are also commonly included in this unit. The operations unit is concerned with the day to day operations of the systems installed by development, such as data base managers, system managers, network managers, and operators.

The technical support services unit is primarily concerned with supporting the users of your information system, not the technology, including the installation of systems, the training of personnel in system usage, troubleshooting, the writing of user manuals, and help desk support.

Management Of Technical Support Services

Technical support services interfaces the information system to the users of that system. The unit is typically headed by someone who has an in-depth understanding of the organization’s business goals, objectives and processes, an engineer’s grasp of information systems technology, and, of paramount importance, an understanding of the human factors, such as people, personalities, motivations and management.

The technical support services director or manager is required to interface with business processing, engineering, and personnel groups. This technical support services leader will be primarily concerned with assuring that the organization has access to the information system and that the information system is achieving the service levels expected by its customers, as well as the organization itself.

Dedicated Units Supporting Technical Aspects

Technical support services normally consists of units, dedicated to the installation and configuration of hardware and software. These functions are performed by technically competent individuals with knowledge and experience in computer installation, network connectivity, operating systems configuration, computer security and troubleshooting.

These are the employees who install new workstations for new employees, who answer to system-down issues, irregularities in system performance, connectivity issues and load distribution. Network engineers, operating system technicians and computer repair technicians are found among this group.

Readily Available To Give Advice

Being the primary interface between the organization’s information system and its customers, technical support staff must be readily available to the system’s customers.

Call centers are run by technical support services, staffed by individuals who possess technical and application knowledge and skills, and have an ability to calm, assure and guide customers towards a successful resolution of a wide variety of issues and problems that arise when non-technical people use the thoroughly technical information system that is the vital infrastructure of most organizations today.

Troubleshooters, teachers, problem resolution experts, the technical support services of an organization is a critical group whose performance can impact the performance of the organization, and ultimately, the bottom line. An enterprise would be unwise to do without them!

Large Organizations Keeping Their Technical Support Staff

This is the reason many large organizations continue to hold on to their technical support staff, and do not outsource these services. There have been experiences when these services were outsourced to outside companies based overseas, and their skills and knowledge was well below par and left many companies to the need rehire support staff.

These days, there are some dedicated service companies, for smaller business that cannot afford large technical support units. These smaller businesses, may work from home but need technical support in order to run their businesses effectively. It is these areas where companies dedicated to supporting small businesses, are most effective.

Support For Accounting Services

But these small businesses may be a one man band or as small as 10 people running a small organisation. For example, they may need staff for their accounting services, to keep all their accounting up to date. Some accounting companies provide technical services, to help businesses run their accounting software.

This is, but one example of many uses of technical support services.
