Windows Software Evolved Over Time
By Joel Wannamaker
After the announcement by MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry
Systems) of Albuquerque, New Mexico of its Altair 8800 being showcased
on the cover of Popular Electronics in January 1975, a few people,
including Bill Gates and Paul Allen, realized that the primary
factor in the future of personal computing was in the hands of
unlimited software.
Hobbyists became adventurers, as the use of personal computers
was growing rapidly, but without any idea of what these machines
could do or be. It was a journey to be shared by a few pioneers
and one which ultimately launched Windows software.
The Beginner’s All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code
Paul Allen was employed by Honeywell at the time, and Bill Gates,
who was in his second year at Harvard, set out together to adapt
the Beginner’s All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, which was
a simplified computer language used by students who wanted to
learn how to program.
They began working day and night to create the first version
of Microsoft BASIC for the Altair. They licensed BASIC to their
first customer, MITS, and thus began the journey of writing computer
language programs for personal computers.
The Story Of Microsoft
The first known reference to the eventual name Microsoft was
in 1975. In a letter that Bill Gates wrote to Paul Allen, he used
the name "Micro-soft" to refer to a beginning partnership.
In November of the following, year Paul Allen resigned from MITS
to join Micro-soft full time.
Perhaps as a forerunner to Windows software, during that same
month the trade name "Microsoft" was at last registered
with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico for
the purpose of identifying programs used with computers, including
data processing and programming. The application stated the name
had been in use since November 1975.
Microsoft MS-DOS and Apple Macintosh
Although unknown at the time, the industry would eventually revolve
around two primary operating systems: Microsoft MS-DOS and Apple
Macintosh. Another significant transition, from mainframe to personal
computing, was underway at the same time, supported by the evolving
standards that were beginning to show up in the PC marketplace.
The IBM personal computer was the first to debut with Microsoft’s
Disk Operating System (MS-DOS).
In late September of 1994, Microsoft announced that Windows 95
would be the official name for the next version of the Windows
OS. This was followed by the worldwide launch in June 1998 of
Windows 98. September 2000 brought us Windows ME (Millennium Edition).
In October of 2001, Microsoft released Windows XP versions, including
Windows XP Professional.
Microsoft Vista Operating System
The history of windows software has cumulated with the release
of the Microsoft Vista operating system. However, with Microsoft’s
history, you can be sure they have something bigger and better
on the drawing board.
Whenever a new operating system comes out people inwardly groan.
Will their old software programs run on the new platform? How
much will they need to review your options and learn, in order
to operate the system effectively? Well do not worry about that
problem with Windows Vista.
The makers at Microsoft put in several years to make sure that
your transition over to the new operating system would be as seamless
as possible. This is a fantastic piece of software that can change
how you view your computer and operating systems.
