Wireless Internet Service With Many Misconceptions
By Joan Kickosawa
So you have the laptop but do you now need to know a little about
wireless internet service? There are many misconceptions about
wireless service. For instance, many people falsely believe they
can just hook up to the internet wherever they go. While there
are many "hotspots" around major cities, they are not
always free or available everywhere.
Also, sometimes one of those wireless networks you see listed
is actually someone’s personal internet that they are paying an
internet access provider for. If you tap into it, then you’re
dishonestly stealing their service! So you need to be careful
when setting up a network properly.
A Few Basic Requirements For A Wireless Service
To get wireless service, you will need to meet a few basic requirements.
First, and most obviously, you must have a laptop computer with
a wireless adapter installed, which is standard in nearly every
new machine. You can also hook up to a local WiFi network if you
have a desktop computer with a wireless network adapter (either
an add-in card, a USB port plug-in or a bridge connector).
The Linksys brand has a lot of quality products to bring your
desktop up to par. Cell phones and PDAs can also link up with
a wireless free internet service. Next, you’ll need to subscribe
to a high speed internet access provider in your area, unless
you happen to be situated near one of the free wireless "hotspots."
Often your computer will be able to locate WiFi hot spot locations
if they’re around.
Is Your Home Wireless Friendly?
Sometimes you may find that you can connect to your high speed
wireless internet service, but it’s not functioning as fast as
it should. There are a few easy ways to remedy this situation
without throwing your arms up and ordering Verizon’s top speed
$145 home internet services. Some houses are more wireless friendly
than others.
Thick walls, large objects and heavy carpeting can sometimes
cause interferences, particularly the further away from your router
you are. Try to position your router on a flat surface, away from
obstructions and in a central location.
A Secure Network
Also, sometimes your neighbor’s signal can even get in your way,
or worse yet, a neighbor could be piggybacking off your paid cable
internet services for free! To ensure this doesn’t happen, ask
your internet access provider how to create a secure network so
no one can steal your signal and slow you down.
WiMAX is one of the newest buzzes in the world of wireless internet
service. This new wonderful service solves three current problems.
One, you will no longer need to leave your internet connection
at home; you will be able to access your internet service anywhere
you take your laptop, much like how cell phones remain always
automatically connected!
Lighting Speeds To Download Movies
Two, rather than connect at a sub-par speed of 384 - 2 mbps,
you’ll be loading up at lightning speeds like the Japanese with
7 mbps so you can download movies in minutes, rather than hours!
Three, instead of paying $50 or more for your wireless service,
you’ll get the top speed for just $20/month with Comcast internet
service!
Right now you can only purchase this new technology in Portland,
Oregon and Baltimore, Maryland, but dozens of new cities will
be added to the network by 2010.
