Wireless Internet Services For Your Laptop And Desktop

By Joan Kickosawa

Currently, there are three ways to connect to computer internet services; dial up, broadband or WiFi. Dial up access is the slowest type of service but is also the cheapest.

A broadband ISP can deliver high speed internet by a cable or DSL line. Offices usually use a T1 or T3 line. With wireless internet services (WiFi), you can access the internet wherever you are through your laptop. Restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, college campuses and libraries are just a few of the places you can access this network, which is usually free.

Different Networking Standards For Wireless Internet

Wireless internet services come in a few different networking standards that are classified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. For instance, 802.11a transmits at the 5 Ghz data frequency at a speed of 54 mbps. Another option is 802.11b, which is good for cheap internet service but also transmits less data (2.4 Ghz) at a considerably slower 11 mbps rate.

The 802.11g transmits on the 2.4 Ghz frequency band like 802.11b but it can handle more data, like the 802.11a, because it uses the same coding; even so, network congestion transfers data at 24 mbps rather than 54. The solution to this high speed internet services problem is 802.11n, which can reach real world speeds of 140 mbps.

Laptop Or Desktop computer With Built-In Wireless Transmitter

Connecting to a wireless internet service is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Your wireless home internet services will require a laptop or desktop computer with a built-in wireless transmitter, which is standard in all newer models.

In some cases, you can buy a USB port wireless adapter, a special software program and drivers so older computers can still connect to networks. At home, you can easily connect all the family computers to one modem/router, without connecting dozens of wires. On-the-go, connecting to online internet services is a cheap and convenient way to get immediate information.

Wireless internet services are the best connection for laptops and also work extremely well for home internet services. As with anything, WiFi is not perfect. The router can fail if too many people are trying to access high bandwidth applications (like peer to peer downloading) at the same time.

Transmitting Through Walls And Large Structures

For instance, if the twelve-year-old is playing World of Warcraft, the fourteen-year-old is downloading a movie and the eighteen-year-old is downloading music at the same time within the household, then the internet connection speed could drop dramatically from 54 mbps down to 24 mbps or less.

In some cases, members of Wireless internet services can even lose their connections. Sometimes wireless signals have a hard time transmitting through walls or large structures. Lastly, wireless connections could also be less secure than services from other internet services providers, so it’s up to the individual to create a secure, password-coded network that no one else can access.
